TPS Out and About to Eastbourne
Sunday 2nd March 2025
Ten members and four family members met for coffee at a café near the seafront in Eastbourne on a slightly chilly but extremely sunny late winter’s day. The light was rather harsh and would test our photography throughout the day.
After coffee the various members went their own separate ways around Eastbourne taking in the various photo opportunities around the town, the pier, the beach and the seafront.
Following a couple of hours around town most members met at Harry Ramsden’s for traditional fish and chips and refreshments before heading out for the afternoon to take in the parts of town they had not visited during the morning session.
During our travels during the day many members met at various points around town and as the afternoon progressed members began to drift away towards home.
Thanks to all those who attended for your continued support.
You will be able to view a selection of our images from the day on the Club Flickr feed under the Out & About section.

TPS Out and About to Chartwell
Wednesday 19th February 2025
Six members and two family members met at the café at the gate of the above National Trust property before the estate opened.
Following suitable refreshments, and as the estate had opened, we made our way into the property. The house itself is closed at this time of year but we were able to access all other areas even though one of the routes to the woodland was inaccessible due repair work being carried out.
The ground was very wet underfoot but we were able to make our way to the woodland while pausing to take our photographs. There were some early signs of spring around the woodland particularly lots of snowdrops.
Following approximately an hours stroll around the woodland we then proceeded to the exterior of the house and the walled garden, much of which had been prepared for planting of various flowers and vegetables (including some rather well established rhubard that made some members really jealous).
We concluded the morning with further refreshments/lunch in the café before heading our separate ways.
Thanks to all those who attended for your continued support.
You will be able to view a selection of our images from the day on the Club Flickr feed under the Out & About section and there are some below.

TPS Out & About for Blue Hour at Westminster
Saturday 1st February 2025
Eleven members and two family members gathered on Saturday 1st February 2025 to attempt to capture some "blue" hour images on and around Westminster Bridge. This outing had originally been planned for Sunday 26th January but as the weather on that date was particularly wet a re-arranged event was well supported (two further members had braved the wet weather on the original date and therefore did not attend the re-arranged event).
We met on the south side of Westminster Bridge (on the Albert Embankment by St. Thomas’ Hospital. This gave us the opportunity to capture images across the Thames towards the Houses of Parliament and the surrounding area.
The weather was cold and cloudy and likelihood of capturing blue hour didn’t seem hopeful. However, as the light began to fade the clouds were swept away and we were able to capture at least some favourable images.
Due to the cold weather some of the participants began to drift away home as the darkness descended. However, a few hardy souls remained and gathered some images after dark.
Thanks to all those who attended for your continued support.
You will be able to view our images from the day on the Club Flickr feed under the Out & About section here and a sample below.

It’s All in the Mind – An introduction to Photopsychology
This Thursday see’s the return of Ken Scott with his talk entitled It’s All in the Mind – An introduction to Photopsychology:
What is it that influences us to see what we see (or don’t see) and to like what we like? What is the effect of compositions and colours? How are you responding to facial expression and body language? How do our minds and our social environments influence how we see, think, feel and behave as photographers?
The trouble is, we give everything a label. It is how we understand the world. What happens if we take the labels away? If we go back to the fundamentals of seeing?
This presentation goes where nobody else goes. We will take seeing back to the raw elements of contrast and light. We will explore the basics of visual cognition that enable us to make sense of the world around us. We will look at lines, colours, expression and emotion. We will celebrate how we see uniquely.
Let us explore photography under the surface. Let us better understand our responses to images and the things we see.
See Ken’s website here

TPS Out & About
Photo walk around some of the Wren Churches in the City of London
Thursday 21st November 2024
Eleven club members and one family member met at Pret a Manger on the corner of Cannon Street and Walbrook for pre walk coffee. The weather was cold and grey but this did not deter us. The plan was to walk around the City of London looking at nine Wren inspired churches (either designed by or repaired with his assistance after the Great Fire).
The first of our proposed churches, St, Stephen Walbrook, was unfortunately closed for more current renovation and was covered in scaffolding and tarpaulins. We proceeded to the churches of St. Mary Aldermary, St. Mary-le-Bow, St. Mary Woolnoth, St. Mary Abchurch and St. Mary-at-Hill. These churches were interesting and different in their own ways. As the churches are now surrounded by the glass, concrete and steel of the modern City we were able to show the juxtaposition of the old and the new.
We then visited the ruins of St. Dunstan in the East and the resultant garden. This is a popular location with City workers, especially at lunchtime. This gave additional opportunities for some street photography.
Our walk ended at the church of All Hallows by the Tower. This church has a crypt museum in the Undercroft which afforded further varied opportunities for photography.
We then dispersed and made our individual journeys home from our preferred stations.
Thanks to all those who attended for your continued support.
You will be able to view a selection of our images from the day on the Club Flickr feed under the Out & About section.

Tripartite Competition
Tuesday 19th November 2024
Last Tuesday the first of this year's external competitions, the Tripartite with Old Coulsdon CC and Sevenoaks CC, was hosted by Old Coulsdon. This is a competition for both prints and pdis. Although our prints received some disappointing scores, resulting in our lying in third place at the half way stage, our pdi entries did particularly well and at the end of the evening our combined score was only half a point short of the eventual winners, Old Coulsdon.
Final scores were:
Old Coulsdon
Prints 68.5, PDI 68.5, Overall 137
TPS
Prints 66, PDI 70.5, Overall 136.5
Sevenoaks
Prints 68, PDI 61.5, Overall 129.5
Our top scorers were Eddie Lord and Sarah Bedwell (both 9s), Alan Gristwood (9.5), and Simon Simpson and Marie-Ange Bouchard (both 10s). Well done!
The next external competition is the SPA Interclub Print Competition on Saturday 7th December at East Horsley Village Hall.

TPS Out and About to Walthamstow
Friday 11th October 2024
Eight of our members met at Victoria Station and proceeded to travel to Walthamstow.
Following the obligatory coffee break at the Costa directly outside Walthamstow Central station we walked through the residential streets of Walthamstow to an area designated as the “Village”. This gave many opportunities for some street photography on a bright sunny day.
After passing through the Village, we found ourselves in an Industrial Estate which contained an establishment calling itself “God’s Own Junkyard”. This was a display of salvaged, reclaimed and fantasy neon signs of old movie props and retro displays. These signs are apparently for hire or for sale. The Junkyard only allowed photography using a mobile phone so this proved a different challenge for us.
From the Junkyard we moved on to St. Mary’s Church and churchyard. The shadows allowed for some interesting lighting around the churchyard. We were unable to enter the church due to an event taking place.
After leaving the churchyard we strolled back to the Village for lunch and then made our respective journeys home.
Thanks to all those who attended for your continued support.

TPS Out and About to Willows Bird of Prey Centre
Tuesday 17th September 2024
Eleven of our members met for coffee at the Blueberry Café at the Coolings Lifestyle in Knockholt. After coffee we moved into the Bird of Prey Centre and headed for one of their display areas where the birds perform for the audience.
The display area was under trees and therefore the light was quite low. We were shown, along with the rest of the audience, three separate owls by the handlers. Each handler gave a description of their respective bird which included lots of detail regarding natural habitat, diet etc. These descriptions gave us opportunities to photograph the owls both in flight and perched. Following the regular display the handlers reappeared with more owls (that were not involved in the display) for their regular exercise. This afforded more opportunities for photographs.
Members then viewed more of the exhibits in the Centre including meerkats, alpacas, pigs, wallabies and by the pond some dragonflies.
After lunch, again taken in the Blueberry Café, the remaining members attended the second display of the day. This was in an open area where the light was much better. This display consisted of a Blue and Yellow Macaw, followed by falcons and hawks. This display followed a similar pattern to the owl display in the morning. Lots of information regarding the birds was imparted by the handlers while the birds were flown. Following the display, we witnessed the training of two new falconers with their birds. These afforded yet more photo opportunities.
This ended a very enjoyable day.
Thanks to all those who attended for your continued support.

Kempton Park Steam Museum
Out & About
Sunday 19th November 2023
Eight members attended the final “steam day” of the year at the above museum. The museum houses two triple expansion engines ‘Sir William Prescott’ (named after the chairman of the Metropolitan Water Board) and ‘Lady Bessie Prescott’ (his wife). These were originally used to pump 12 to 19 million gallons of drinking water per day to reservoirs in North London for the supply of fresh water to The City, Central, East and West London. The triple-expansion engines at Kempton Park are similar in design and size to the engines onboard the RMS Titanic. They are often used in films and documentaries about the ill-fated ship.
Only the “Sir William Prescott” engine was in steam on the day and there was an option to have a guide tour of the “Lady Bessie Prescott” engine during the trip.
The weather on the day was dull and dreary, which suited our photography. The windows on the building make photography an additional challenge.
The museum and the engines are run by several volunteers who were able to answer any questions about the exhibits displayed.
Our members began to disperse before closing time as the light was beginning to fade.
Some of our images from the trip are shown below.
Thanks to all those that attended for your continued support.

London to Brighton Veteran Car Run
Out & About
Sunday 5th November 2023
Eight members endured an early start to meet at Earlswood on the main A23. Our vantage point allowed us to photograph the assortment of vehicles and their appropriately attired occupants as they made their way from Hyde Park to Brighton seafront. Fortunately, the backdrop to many of our shots was simply the autumn woodland on the roadside.
It was a very bright sunny morning, although rather damp underfoot following rain over the preceding days, but this did not dampen our spirits.
After approximately an hour and a half we adjourned to the Earlswood Lakes café for some hot refreshments.
Some of our images from the trip are shown below.

Knole Park Deer Rut Out & About - Sunday
15th October 2023
Seven members endured an early start (before dawn) to access the deer park at Knole. It was one of the first cold mornings of the autumn and a slight ground frost was evident as we made our way from the car park outside the park towards the area where many deer gather during the rutting season (Echo Mound by the main Knole car park).
As we entered the park it was apparent that the deer were starting to state there claims to both territory and females. The still morning air was filled with the sound of “bellowing” from the mound. Much care was exercised as there were deer on both sides of the path.
The sun rose at 07.22am and lit the deer on the mound in some good golden hour light. The light also provided some good dappled light on the deer under the tree cover.
There were few actual “clashes” between the stags in the time that we were in the park, however some members did manage to capture images of those that did occur.
Some of our images from the trip are shown below.

Out and About
Maritime Greenwich Out & About – Sunday 3rd September 2023
Seven members met at The Green Café on Greenwich High Road on an extremely warm Sunday morning. As we arrived at Greenwich Station, we noticed that there were a lot of runners who had been awarded medals for finishing the Big Half marathon. The finish line was between the Cutty Sark and the Old Naval College and, as the event was still ongoing, many of our access points to the river were closed off.
This did not deter us, and we made our way on smaller groups to the National Maritime Museum, the Queen’s House, Greenwich Market and viewing the Big Half event. Some members did manage to get to the river and to access the Greenwich Foot Tunnel, but this required re-tracing their steps for some distance.
It was agreed to meet for lunch at a pub in the Market, but this was fully reserved by friends and family of the runners from the event and we were forced to adjourn to a nearby café to sit outside with coffee and sandwiches and where the service was very good.
Following lunch some members decided to make their way home while some braved the rising temperatures to scale the hill up to the Royal Observatory and its stunning views over Canary Wharf.
Some of our images are shown below.

Out and About
Out & About to Scotney Castle - Friday 28th July 2023
Seven TPS members met in the café of the above property. The weather was dull and damp although the forecast had been for improving conditions. Following refreshments all round we began by discovering that the guided estate walk for that morning had been cancelled.
We therefore began strolling around the property in the direction of the 14th century castle. By this time the light rain and drizzle had taken hold and the walk was punctuated by seeking sheltering under the trees.
The inclement weather did, however, give us some interesting opportunities to include the raindrops in our images. The rain eased as we approached lunchtime and after a further break for refreshments some of the members visited the Victorian house and the Walled garden, which after lunch was now bathed in sunshine.
Some of our images from the day are attached and listed below.
Once again thank you to all those who attended for your continued support.

Out and About
Evening Out & About around Tandridge – Thursday 20th July 2023
Eight TPS members met outside the Barley Mow pub in Tandridge on a fairly dull, grey evening.
The pubs website included a section which provides several walks around the area, both circular or either to (or from) the pub going to the likes of Godstone and Oxted. We followed the so-called one-hour circular walk beginning by heading uphill to St. Peter’s Church and then continuing downhill along Tandridge Lane until crossing a designated footpath across the point-to-point course to Jackass Lane. We continued along the lane towards Tandridge and when reaching Tandridge Lane diverted through Cranberry Hollow to approach the Barley Mow from behind the beer garden.
A further two members joined us in the Barley Mow for some refreshment.
Some of our images from the evening are included below. Once again thanks for your continued support for the Out & About events. It is much appreciated.

John Nathan’s Wild Flowers Out & About – Friday 7th July 2023
We received a very kind invitation from long standing Club member John Nathan to visit his garden and photograph the wild flowers that he had planted in a repurposed vegetable patch.
Six TPS members were able to make the visit on a very warm afternoon and were welcomed with some much needed cold drinks.
Some of our images are shown below.

Out and About
Out & About to Amberley Living Museum – Steam Day – Sunday 2nd July 2023
Six TPS members and one additional family member met in the café above the living museum before commencing our wanderings around the site.
The museum contains many permanent exhibits covering many different subjects, television and radio, telephones, power generation, narrow gauge railways and the lime kilns, to state a few.
The main event for the day was an exhibition of several steam powered vehicles, both large and small. From road rollers to traction engines, steam powered pipe organs and even a steam car!
All the above gave us many photographic opportunities during the day before leaving just before closing time. Some of our images are attached and listed below.
Once again thank you to all those who attended for your continued support and particularly Steve Whiteley for suggesting this subject.

Out and About
Evening Out & About around Godstone – Thursday 22nd June 2023
Twelve TPS members met outside the White Hart Barn in Godstone for the first of the informal summer evening Out & Abouts.
Our walk commenced along the path beside the Bay Ponds before crossing to St. Nicholas’ Chruch before progressing across the farmland at the rear of the churchyard and onwards to the rear of Leigh Place and Glebe Water. Our walk then took us along Eastbourne Road towards Godstone but a division was taken along Church Lane to retrace our steps past the Bay Ponds and the White Hart itself.
There were many opportunities to take photographs along the whole route (some of these can be seen below).
The weather for the walk was good and we managed to make it back to the pub before the light faded completely. Refreshments were taken into the garden as the temperature had remained quite sultry.
Thank you to all those who participated for your continued support at these events.

On the night congratulations for full 10 marks go to Caroline Burke and Michaela Coelho in Club, Kirsti Brown in Intermediate and Marcus Scott-Taggart and Peter Veale in Advanced.
Totting the scores up over the three rounds the winners for the Mono Print Competition 2022/23 are Steve Whiteley in Club, just ahead of Gary Watson, Marcel Wizenberg in Intermediate ahead of Kirsti Brown and Peter Veale in Advanced, overtaking Chris Fenton in the final round.
Thank you to everyone who contributed entries across the three rounds providing some excellent images to inspire us all.
Out and About
Out & About to Emmett’s Garden – Tuesday 9th May 2023
Seven TPS members and one additional family member met in the car park of the above property prior to the site opening before entering the site and beginning our stroll around the gardens.
The weather was somewhat cloudy but the temperature generally was rather pleasant. This gave us quite good light for photographing the bluebells although the light was changeable as the sun made some appearances during the morning.
As we were early into the site there were very few people around the gardens. This allowed us fairly good access to both the bluebell slopes and the formal gardens to capture our images. Some of our images are included below.
We concluded the trip with the obligatory visit to the café for a hot drink and cake.
Once again thank you to all those who attended for your continued support.

Out and About
Arlington Bluebell Walk/Bates Green Farm Garden - Friday 5th May 2023
Six members and one family member met in the car park of the above site in somewhat cloudy conditions.
We entered the site and chose one of the many signposted walks around the woods, fields, ponds and the Cuckmere River.
The first section of the walk through the wood was an explosion of bluebells interspersed with white wood anemones. Site instructions required that we stick to the marked paths to avoid damaging the bluebells. This still enabled us to take many images with a wide variety of equipment. This was aided by the disappearance of the cloud to be replaced by some very pleasant sunshine.
There were a couple of ponds along the walks which enable some reflection images. Our route took us through an area of wild garlic that was in flower and quite pungent.
Our walking route concluded at the farm café where lunch was taken before moving on to the garden of the farm which adjoined the bluebell woods.
Some of our images from the day are included below.
Thank you to those participants who attended and your continued support for these events.

Out and About
Standen House and Gardens – Friday 14th April 2023
The intention for the above trip was to have a leisurely stroll around the estate surrounding this property. However as the five participants arrived in the car park a steady drizzle started to descend. This and the previous few days of heavier rain made the pathways extremely slippery and, in places, ankle deep in mud. After a shorter time than originally planned, and with the rain becoming heavier, it was decided that we would tour Standen House itself.
After our self-guided tour of this Arts and Crafts style house we adjourned to the café for the obligatory coffee and cake. As the rain had at last begun to ease we then visted the more formal gardens.
Some of our images are included below.
Thank you to those participants who braved the weather and continue to support these events.

A note on AI Generated Images
Many of you will have seen recent news coverage on the subject of AI–generated images, and the debate around whether or not they constitute ‘photography’. The debate will no doubt continue for some time to come!
We are aware that the various bodies that club photographers tend to look to for guidance – RPS, PAGB, and in our case SPA, are all considering these issues and will no doubt come up with their own guidance and definitions to assist camera clubs in due course.
These are complex and challenging issues, not least because many of us already use AI features in commercially available digital photography software. Your committee is keen to ensure that TPS remains in step with whatever emerges from these bodies, and has concluded that it would not be right for TPS to 'go it alone' by attempting our own definitions in advance of such guidance.
We do, however, need some kind of interim position with respect to our own competitions, not least because our recent Creative Cup competition did include an AI-generated entry which attracted praise from the judge.
As an interim step, we are asking our members to refrain from submitting AI-generated images in club competitions, pending further guidance. We will of course have no way of knowing whether an image is AI generated or not, so we will be dependent on members' consciences in adhering to this request.
Our hope is that we will be in a position to issue guidance in good time for next season's Creative Cup competition, since if AI-generated images are to be allowed in any of our competitions, that particular event seems the most appropriate start point.

Creative Competition
Thursday 27th April 2023
The Creative competition provided an entertaining evening with a wide range of imaginative and quirky approaches to produce some very individual and compelling images. Appreciative comments and helpful tips from our judge Pat Couder really added to the evening’s enjoyment. The opportunity for members to describe their thought processes and techniques behind each image was both entertaining and informative.
Congratulations to the winner, Kirsti Brown, for “Into the Light – a tribute to Josh Adamski”, combining imagination, ICM and blended images to create a thought provoking picture. Congratulations too to Sarah Bedwell and Brian Smith, both Highly Commended and to Chris Fenton, Barbara Witherington and Rog Matthews for their Commended images.
All of the entries can be viewed here
Alec Braid Panel Competition
Thursday 13th April 2023
There was an excellent turnout for the Alex Braid panel competitions which saw the highest number of entries for several years and a wide range of genres.
The judge was Andy Smith LRPS CPAGB who presented real insight into the panel compositions and how the images worked together, what they said about the photographer and what emotions the panels evoked.
Andy was especially appreciative of the ICM, multiple exposure, use of shutter speed and colours of Chris Fenton who won the PDI panel (“Path in the Forest”) and Colour Print panel (Impressions from London Thames) competitions and was Highly Commended for his Mono Print panel. Jon Cowdock won the Mono Print competition with “Windswept Silhouettes” which generated a real sense of being there.
Also recognised in a field of strong entries were John Howard (Highly Commended) and Digby Christmas (Commended) for PDI panels and Simon Bedwell (Highly Commended) and Jan Yardley (Commended) in Colour Print panels.
Colour Print Final Round 3
Thursday 23rd March 2023
Darren Pullman judged 34 prints across the 3 classes in the final of Colour Prints - Round 3. Darren coped very well after the display lightbulbs went out, how many photographers did it take? Not enough apparently, they were out for the rest of the night.
Congratulations to those who scored top marks which can be seen below.
The overall Colour Print winners for the season were Michaela Coelho in Club class, Kirsti Brown in Intermediate and Marie-Ange Bouchard ARPS in Advanced.

Out and About
Mayfair – Monday 27th February 2023
Eight of our members met for coffee at the West One Shopping Centre at Bond Street Tube Station before setting off on a walk around the local area.
We began by walking along South Molton Street towards Brook Street and Hanover Square. From the statue of a young Pitt the Elder we stopped off at St. George’s Church and then proceeded along Saville Row towards Piccadilly. Passing both Fortnum & Mason and the Royal Academy we proceeded to the Burlington Arcade then along Old Bond Steet and Grafton Street to Berkley Square. Lunch was taken near Berkley Square and following this we proceeded via Charles Street, Curzon Street and South Audley Street to the retail premises of James Purdey & Sons (the Royal gun makers). From Purdey’s we walked to Park Lane past the Grosvenor House Hotel and along Upper Grosvenor Street to Grosvenor Square and the site of the former American Embassy before utilising the smaller back streets to wend our way back to Bond Street Tube Station.
The weather for the day was fine and dry, if a little chilly, but this did not dampen our spirits.
Thanks to all those who attended for your continued support.

Out and About
Worthing – Sunday 19th February 2023
Thirteen of our members (and three additional family members) met for coffee close to the seafront in Worthing on an bright sunny morning.
Following coffee we split up and went our separate ways along the seafront (either East or West) or along the Art Deco pier itself. There were many photographic opportunities around the town and the seafront with examples of seascapes, beach shots, architecture, street scenes etc. being seen by our members especially in the warm sunshine.
We arranged to meet back at the pier head at lunch time where we managed to get into the same restaurant (all sixteen of us!) for lunch of fish & chips. After lunch we continued in the same vein with many members visiting the part of the seafront not photographed during the morning session. During the afternoon the tide had turned and was going out. This allowed us access under the pier offering more varied photographic opportunities. Low tide was approximately one hour before sunset, the combination of the two giving even more opportunities.
Some members had begun to depart during the afternoon but those that remained until sunset were also treated to a murmuration of starlings over the pier as the sun began to set.
Thanks to all those who attended for your continued support.

Thursday 16th February 2022
Eddie Hyde FRPS from Bookham club made his first visit to TPS to judge round 2 of the Mono print competition. Michaela Coelho and Marcel Wizenburg both scored "10"s in Club and Intermediate respectively.
The Advanced class saw a very strong set of images which were difficult for Eddie to separate holding back 8 of the 20 images and with high scores across the board. But he provided insightful critique to identify the strongest images with congratulations to Simon Bedwell with 2 perfect scores and John Nathan also with 2 held back for high scores.
The high scoring images are below and you can see all of the images here

Winter Lights Festival at Canary Wharf – Friday 20th January 2023
Thirteen members assembled just before sunset in a local coffee shop at Canary Wharf for the above event. As we were a reasonably sized group and there were a lot of people around it was better to make our own way around the site. We were able to collect printed maps from the stewards which gave the locations of the 22 installations set all over Canary Wharf.
The installations were lit at 5.00pm and remained illuminated until 10.00pm. Although the weather was dry, it was extremely cold. This however did not deter our hardy members (suitably wrapped against the cold) who created a number of images (some of which are viewable on the Club’s Flickr feed under the Out & About section – please advise me if you would like to join the Out & About group).
We met back at the coffee shop after a couple of hours in the cold to warm up and share our experiences before heading home.
Thanks to all those who attended for your continued support.

Colour Print Round 2
Thursday 19th January 2023
Tim Morland ARPS judged our 46 prints across the 3 classes in Colour Print Round 2. As usual there was a wide variety of styles and topics in the images. Tim provided praise and constructive feedback, with helpful hints on cropping, highlights and composition.
Especial congratulations to Susan Price, Laura Barsi, Kirsti Brown, Peter Veale and Marie-Ange Bouchard who scored top marks for their captivating images which can be seen below.
After 2 rounds all classes leaders are easily catchable in the final round. The final round also provides the opportunity for new entrants to practise their printed images.

PDI Round 2
Thursday 8th December 2022
We were joined by Stephen Carroll ARPS for the second round of our PDI competition, with 47 images across the three classes for him to assess and discuss.
Congratulations to Michaela Coehlo in Club class on her 10 for “Dancing on water (Reflections)”. Whilst there were no 10s in Intermediate, Rog Matthews was the high scorer in this class with 9.5 for his image “Leap of Faith”. 10s in Advanced were awarded to Sarah Bedwell for “The March of the Pylons”, Eddie Lord for “Retired Rose”, and Geoff Spriegel for “Dahlia Evelyn”.

Out and About
Faversham – Friday 25th November 2022
Eighteen of our members met at the Shepherd Neame Visitor Centre in Faversham for pre-arranged hot drinks before embarking on a tour of the brewery. Our tour guide was Laura, who was friendly, informative, and amusing. During the tour we had to abide by Health and Safety rules and were required to wear hi-vis vests. Laura became the “Shepherdess” and our group became the “Flock”! After the tour we were treated to a “tutored tasting” of some of the brewery’s products. Each person was provided with six samples (amounting in total to approximately one pint). The colour, clarity and condition of each sample was explained, and the product then tasted.
After the tour and the tasting, we went our separate ways to obtain some lunch and to also photograph some of the other sights of Faversham. Some members found their way to Standard Quay and the Iron Wharf Boatyard.
The weather for the day was bright and sunny, if a little chilly, and the light was superb with not a cloud in sight which allowed for some excellent images.
Thanks to all those who attended for your continued support.

Tripartite Competition
Thursday 24th November 2022
The annual Tripartite competition between ourselves, Sevenoaks and Old Coulsdon Camera Club (OCCC) was back in person on November 24th allowing prints for the first time since 2019. Each club submitted 8 PDIs and 8 prints. Our images were selected by our resident judges from high scoring images last year.
As each image would have scored highly in their local competitions the standard was very high, giving a challenge to our judge Rosemary Wilman Hon FRPS who was looking for “something different” alongside excellent composition and technical ability.
OCCC were the runaway winners, scoring highest in both PDIs and print rounds. Sevenoaks came second with TPS in bronze medal position. Congratulations to Brian Smith and Geoff Spriegel who had high scoring images in a competitive field.
Mono Print Round 1
Thursday 17th November 2022
Paul Graber ARPS was our judge for Mono Prints Round 1. He was looking for strong images where a mono treatment really suited the composition, and he gave constructive feedback and clear explanations of how he judged our images.
There were 53 entries across the three classes, slightly up on last year. Particular mentions for to Steve Whiteley in Club with two perfect “10s” for Steampunk Sisters and Shoreham sea defences. Paul thought he must be in the wrong class.
Kirsti Brown and Marcel Wizenburg lead the Intermediate class with high scores, including Marcel’s “Point of view” cityscape. Chris Fenton’s “Dahlia” and Peter Veale’s image of Bamburgh castle also scored 10s in the advanced class littered with strong high scoring images.
The high scoring images are below and you can see all of the images here

Out and About
Canary Wharf - Sunday 30th October 2022
Many of us met on the East Grinstead to London Bridge train and travelled en-masse to the arranged meeting place in a café at Canary Wharf to meet the remainder of the group who had arrived in London earlier in the day.
As our group was quite large it was suggested that we split up and make our own way around the Canary Wharf area to take our photographs. There were many different types of images to be had in the whole area. Following the recent talk at the club by Mike Curry many of our members tried to re-create the type of images that Mike showed us. Some of these images have been included on the Club Flickr feed (see below). There were many other photographic opportunities around the area which kept the group busy until the light began to fade.
As sunset was around 16.30 on the day there were opportunities to try and get some sunset shots of the City of London skyline. Unfortunately, the sunset was not spectacular, and I am not aware that anyone managed to get a good image. However, we did manage to capture some reflection images of the various light sources around the dock areas.
As the light faded even further, we returned to our original meeting place for a hot drink before returning back to London Bridge.
Again, thank you for your continued support and your company on the trips. Hopefully, everyone got home at a reasonable time following the travel problems on the London Bridge to East Grinstead service.

Out and About
Nymans – Wednesday 26th October 2022
Our relatively small group met in the car park of the above property prior to the customary TPS pre-trip visit to the café for a hot drink.
The grounds were rather busy on the day of our visit due to it being half-term. There were a fairly large number of family groups around, all of which were following a set trail of Halloween pumpkins.
The gardens were in good autumnal colour which obviously afforded some good photographic opportunities around the both the garden and the ruined area of the house (we didn’t go into the house on this occasion). However, we did visit the wild garden where we located some fungi.
We spent a couple of hours strolling around the grounds before adjourning for more hot drinks and a spot of lunch or cake at the café.
As always thank you for your participation and support.

Out and About
Godstone to Tandridge and back – Monday 3rd October 2022
We met outside the White Hart Barn in Godstone, a place that is quite familiar to all of us, and began our walk past the ponds at the rear of the Barn towards St. Nicholas’ Church and the many photographic opportunities along the route. We then passed the rear of Leigh Place (again a location that is familiar to many of us) and on around Glebe Water.
Our route then took a slight diversion (to avoid and extremely muddy track following the recent rain) to reach Jackass Lane which took us to Tandridge and St. Peter’s Church. From here we turned along part of the Greensand Way, and after dashing across the A22 returned to the White Hart Barn via Church Lane and the previously visited ponds.
Thank you to those of you that joined us on what was an interesting walk on quite a mild morning. Your support is appreciated as usual.

Out and About
Outwood Common – Thursday 8th September 2022
We met in the cark park between the Outwood Common Mill and Outwood Cricket Club. The weather had been a little inclement during the previous couple of days and pathways were both wet and slippery. The five people participating began in good spirits as we walked from the car par to the Outwood Butcher on Millar’s Lane to stock up with “the best sausage rolls on the planet”.
As we left the butchers the sun made one of its only appearances of the day and the temperature began to rise. To this end some participants removed outer layers to take advantage of the sunshine. This was a bad move as the sunshine was a brief window in the weather and rain began to fall again.
This rain got much heavier over the next half hour or so and became so heavy that it was impossible to take any meaningful photographs and the decision was taken by the group to abandon the trip.
We made our way back to our cars getting wetter with every step and called an early end to the day.
Thank you to the four people (other than me) who participated in this soggy day. Your support is appreciated as usual.
You will be able to view a selection of our images from the day on the Club Flickr feed under the Out & About section.

Colour Print Competition Round 1
Thursday 27th October 2022
We had an impressive 53 entries for the first round of this season's colour print competition. Our guest judge, Geoff Young, offered some insightful critique and entertained us with his humour and anecdotes.
The standard of entries was high, so well done to all who entered. Congratulations to those scoring perfect 10's (new member Michaela Coelho with two top scores in Club, Laura Barsi in Intermediate, and Marie-Ange Bouchard with two top scores in Advanced. Other high scoring entries came from Caroline Burke, Jeff Vianna, Gary Watson, Marcel Wizenberg, Kirsti Brown, Mike Barker, Gary Coomber, Chris Fenton, Peter O'Hare, John Pearson and Peter Veale.
You can see some of the judge's favourite images here
This trip was greatly affected by the fallout from the train and tube strikes on the previous day, and our group was reduced to eight instead of the eleven originally signed up.
After meeting at a Pret a Manger close to Baker Street Tube Station, we walked through The Regent’s Park, passing the lake, bandstand and gardens, and carried on over the Long Bridge towards the towpath of the Grand Union Canal. Our route then took us through ZSL London Zoo, with views of the Snowden Aviary and some of the exhibits. After passing through the Zoo, we climbed to the top of Primrose Hill and, after encountering an impromptu carnival along the way, its views of the London skyline. From Primrose Hill, we returned to the canal towpath and walked towards Little Venice, passing many photographic opportunities along the route, including house boats, canal traffic, urban decay and many others.
We concluded our walk with lunch and discussion of the day at the Warwick Castle pub, before going to Warwick Avenue Tube Station to make our way back to our Mainline Stations and home.
Thank you to those who participated on the day, and for your company along the route.

Out and About
Lullingstone Country Park and Eynsford Friday 29th July 2022
Fifteen members and one guest met at the café at the Visitor Centre around 10.00am. Once assembled, we walked to Eynsford passing along the banks of the River Darent, past Lullingstone Castle and over farmland with views of the Darent Valley and the Eynsford Railway Viaduct. These all provided many photographic opportunities along the way for everyone.
In Eynsford many of the group descended – to the Landlord’s surprise - on the Malt Shovel pub in the High Street for lunch. Served with food and drinks in good time, we walked back to the Country Park via an alternative, flatter route, which passed under the railway viaduct and then passed the Lullingstone Roman Villa and then re-traced our outbound route via the Castle and River.
It was a very hot day, but the temperatures did not deter anyone and the trip finished with many members taking advantage of the Country Park Café’s cold drinks and ice cream.
Thank you to those who participated on the day and for your company along the route.

Mono Print Competition - Round 3 Results
Our guest judge for the final round of our mono print competition was Lawrence Homewood AFIAP, BPE2*, CPAGB. We had 37 entries spread evenly across the Club, Intermediate and Advanced classes.
Congratulations to Rog Matthews and Marcel Wizenberg for achieving scores of 10 in the club class, to Chris Fenton and Seb Springbett for achieving scores of 10 in the intermediate class, and to Jon Cowdock and Peter Veale for achieving scores of 10 in the advanced class.
As there was time available at the end of the evening, our judge introduced an interesting innovation by inviting the members whose images had scored top marks to speak briefly about them.
The judges favourites (the images held back for a second viewing, all of which were awarded scores of 9 or above) are shown here:
Ten Minute Talks
We met online on May 5th for the return of the ‘ten minute talks’ in which a selection of members give short presentations about their journey in photography or a related subject. Thank you to our 7 presenters for their talks as listed below, and to Dominic Murtagh for acting as compere!
Susan Price - My journey to better images … so far
Shiv Kadavath - Backyard birding during the pandemic
Pamela Roper - My adventures in photography
Andy Palmer - My journey in photography
John Howard - Creative photography
Sarah Bedwell - It doesn’t always have to be in focus
Marcus Scott-Taggart - Transitions
As always, the evening proved popular and we enjoyed a fascinating variety of stories, subjects and approaches.
Natural History Competition Results
Members had entered a broad range of images for our annual Natural History PDI and print competitions, judged on 10th March by David Smith LRPS CPAGB from Woking Photographic Society. There were insects, birds, flowers and funghi and several deer, most likely from those members who braved a pre-dawn start in Knole Park last Autumn.
Well done to all who entered, and congratulations to the winners – John Nathan ARPS in the Print section and Geoff Spriegel in the PDI section. Congratulations also to to Chris Fenton who was runner up in the print section, and to Barbara Witherington who scored 10 for each of her entries.
The judges favourites (the images held back for a second viewing, all of which were awarded scores of 9 or above) are shown below.
